Productive Conflict

How to Respond Effectively to Workplace Conflict

Tensions and disagreements are inevitable in the workplace. Often, how folks confront, avoid or ignore conflict situations can make problems worse. While conflict is uncomfortable and unavoidable, it’s possible to develop more productive ways to respond.

Instead of focusing on a step-by-step process for conflict resolution, our workshop teaches how to curb destructive thoughts and behaviours and move toward productive conflict (yes, productive!). Workplace relationships and interactions improve when participants increase self-awareness around their own and other people’s conflict behaviours.

The Workshop Overview

This one-day workshop is designed to help participants improve their self-awareness around conflict behaviours so that they can engage in more productive behaviours and respond better when conflict inevitably arises.

The program features an exploration of DiSC® in a conflict context, ensuring that participants understand their own style of handling tense situations or disagreements.

This workshop includes:

  • Online pre-work.
  • A custom assessment with personalized tips for each participant.
  • Engaging facilitation with helpful video.

During the workshop, participants explore their destructive conflict responses and the ways in which communication skills can affect the outcomes of conflict situations. This workshop offers participants a method for making more productive choices in their response to conflict going forward.

What Participants Learn

  • To identify how their style of handling conflict affects the people around them.
  • How to “catch” themselves when going down a destructive conflict path.
  • Ways to reframe a conflict situation and choose more productive behaviours.
  • The role of communication in generating productive conflict outcomes.
  • How to use communication skills effectively in a range of specific conflict situations.
  • Productive ways to build language for themselves and others around inevitable conflict.

          The Personalized Profile

Adding a deeply customized aspect to this program, each participant completes the DiSC Productive Conflict assessment ahead of the workshop and then we provide them the customized profile that results. We use the profile throughout the workshop, allowing participants to make very personal connections to the content.

          Before and After the Workshop

In many ways, the follow-up effort after a workshop is just as important as the workshop itself. Your participants will have a great day of learning in the workshop but it’s how they apply that learning back at work, in the real world, that is going to make the difference and boost your ROI.

Setting Up Success before the Workshop

Prior to the course, participants will complete an online leadership assessment called DiSC Productive Conflict. This generates a customized, incredibly insightful and useful profile for them, based on conflict types and conflict approaches, that we will use throughout the course.

Applying the Learning after the Workshop

To ensure we deliver the most success for your participants, Padraig follows-up the workshop with a number of methods including:

Follow-up emails reminding participants of different parts of the curriculum and prompting them to think about that content and to apply it in that moment at work.

Each follow-up touch point also includes tools the participant can download to apply the learning.

As well, since this workshop uses the DiSC Productive Conflict profile, we provide each participant with complimentary access to comparison reports — in-depth comparisons between them and a colleague to help them build an even stronger relationship. When both parties agree, the system will generate a Comparison Report for each of them, with new and different detail than was covered in the group workshop.

Other Programs You Might Find Helpful

Productive Conflict helps managers and leaders improve conflict situations and confront destructive behaviours.  A great complement to this program is Essential Conversations – dealing with performance issues before they become performance management problems.  And, if your managers are ready to go deeper in their leadership toolkit, you might want to consider offering The COACH Approach to Leadership  – which teaches leaders and managers how to use a coaching style of conversation with their staff.
